More than a field trip, a journey through time

Field Trips

At Quake, knowledge takes center stage. Here, students and teachers can understand and unravel the events of November 1, 1755, the fateful day that changed Lisbon forever.

As a teacher, you know this better than anyone: children and young people love to learn, but hate having to pay attention. Take your students out of the classroom and try, even for a moment, to get them to look away from their cell phone screens. Take them back in time to the day of the catastrophe in the middle of the Age of Enlightenment. Help them to better understand how the shockwaves of the Great Lisbon Earthquake reached the present day. And along the way, they changed the capital of an Empire and shook the Old Continent, accelerating history.

At Quake, your students will be guided through the ancient and vibrant streets of eighteenth-century Lisbon. They will be able to see and feel how it all happened. Back in the present, they can also learn all about earthquakes and the latest developments in the fields of seismology and geology. As well as providing an unforgettable experience revealing a vanished Lisbon, at Quake we aim to raise awareness of the need to adopt preventive behaviors, informing you about existing civil protection plans and thus encouraging individual responsibility in building a safer society.

INFORMATION ABOUT THE VISIT

Visit

The visit consists of ten rooms and the sessions start every 10 minutes. The group moves on to the next room every 10 minutes. Each session has a maximum capacity of 16 people, so classes with more students will have to be split up. We don't have guided tours, but the structure of the tour makes it easy to access and understand all the content. Along the way, in half of the rooms, we have Hosts who can answer any questions that may come up.

Please note that each session must be accompanied by a teacher/monitor for every fifteen students and that the minimum age for school visits is 8, as the earthquake simulator, an integral part of the visit, as well as other interactive points, require a certain emotional maturity.

Duration

The visit lasts 1 hour and 40 minutes (it can't be shortened) and is available in Portuguese, English, Spanish and French.
