Earthquake in Lisbon: How to Prepare for an Earthquake and Protect Your Family

On February 17, 2025, Lisbon felt the ground shake. At around 1:24 pm, a 4.7 magnitude earthquake was felt, with its epicentre 14 km from Seixal, and most intensely felt in Almada and Sesimbra. Fortunately, there was no damage, but the moment served as an important reminder: we live in an active seismic zone, and preparation is our greatest ally.

What happened?

The tremor lasted only a few seconds, but it was enough to make many people wonder: "What if it were worse? Would I know what to do?" In the hours that followed, small aftershocks were recorded, reinforcing the idea that nature is unpredictable. Lisbon, with its history of earthquakes, such as the great earthquake of 1755, knows well that prevention is the key to facing these events.

The good news is that with some preparation, it’s possible to reduce risks and try and act more calmly and safely in emergency situations.
